(Boston, MA) – ABCD’s Free Tax Preparation Program secured more than $7 million in state and federal tax returns for residents of Greater Boston and the Mystic Valley during the 2025 tax season. Results of this year’s tax season supported by 36 IRS-trained Volunteer Income Tax Assistance  (VITA) volunteers include completion of:

  • 3,593 federal/state returns yielding clients a total of $7,063.762
  • 442 Child Tax Credit eligible returns yielding clients  a total of $596.80
  • 1,033 Earned Income Tax Credit returns yielding  a total of $2,001.183.

ABCD President and CEO Sharon Scott-Chandler said that she is proud that the Free Tax Preparation Program brings cash into the hands of the clients and the communities that ABCD serves. “As prices for everything steadily climb, I am so gratified that ABCD can continue to give our clients and the communities in which they spend their dollars an economic boost,” she said. “Our staff in partnership with our IRS-certified tax preparers, many of whom have been with us for years, relentlessly pursue every tax credit that is due to people who are struggling in this economy.”

The Internal Revenue Service VITA program partners with the Boston Tax Help Coalition, of which ABCD is a co-founder. A public-private collaboration with the City of Boston and other nonprofits, the Boston Tax Coalition seeks to ensure the full participation of all Boston residents in the City’s economic vitality and future. ABCD is also a member of the Massachusetts Association for Community Action (MASSCAP) VITA network and offers free tax preparation services in the Mystic Valley Area. Both the Boston and Mystic Valley coalitions fall under the federal VITA program.

People who qualified for free tax preparation services include:

  • Workers who earned $67,000 or less in 2024
  • People with disabilities
  • Senior citizens
  • Limited English-speaking taxpayers.

These programs are vital to our communities and must continue to be available for the people who need them most.
