ABCD, Action for Boston Community Development, a Boston community organization, has launched a pilot program providing free, 24/7 access to reproductive health supplies through vending machines at three of its program sites, according to a report by The Bay State Banner. The machines are stocked with condoms, safe-sex kits, STI tests, pregnancy tests, emergency contraception and menstrual hygiene products.
“For these things to be available, I am in a very happy place,” Maureen Scott, ABCD’s director of health services, told the news outlet. “I want to see more of these available so people can better take care of themselves and have overall better health.”
The program aims to address disparities in maternal health outcomes and STI transmission rates within Black communities. Since the October launch, the machines have been used approximately 300 times. ABCD hopes the increased accessibility will encourage early testing and treatment, and ultimately improve health equity.
