WHAT:
Toy drop off by local businesses, the City of Boston and community members for the ABCD Toy Drive to benefit disadvantaged children across Greater Boston and the Mystic Valley. ABCD reached out to the media and the community for help with its toy drive that was falling short of the 6,500 toys requested from parents struggling to cover monthly expenses, and are unable to buy toys for their children this holiday season. With the help of the media and generous donors, ABCD will be able to meet the need and make the holidays brighter for children and families. Philanthropist Dr. Paul Buttonwieser founder of the Family to Family Project heard a news story about the Toy Drive needing donations and called ABCD to donate $50,000.
WHY:
The cost of living – food, housing, energy costs, child care and other necessities have created a severe hardship for many families. Holiday presents are often beyond their reach. The ABCD Toy Drive makes the holidays joyful for children from underserved homes throughout Boston and the Mystic Valley. In Boston alone, there are over 23,000 children living under the poverty level. That’s over 22% of all Boston children living below the poverty line of $31,200 for a family of four. Many of these families, parents are working two and three jobs and still struggle to cover the essentials.
