Requests from parents are outpacing donations, according to the organization.
An antipoverty organization that has served Greater Boston for more than 60 years is asking area residents and businesses to contribute to its toy drive as it attempts to fill a shortfall and assist struggling parents during the holiday season, its leaders said Sunday.
Action for Boston Community Development, a nonprofit human services organization that provides resources, programs, and services to more than 100,000 area residents, has received more than 6,500 toy requests from parents struggling to make ends meet, according to a statement released by the organization.
Given the large number of requests, the organization is asking for community members and corporations to make cash or toy donations by Dec. 13.
The ABCD Toy Drive benefits children from underserved homes throughout Boston and the Mystic Valley, the organization said. As the organization prepares to deliver holiday gifts, there is a “considerable need” for toys for children ages 10 to 12, according to the statement. Toy donations can be initiated at bostonabcd.org/toydriveform. Cash donations can be made online at bostonabcd.org/donate.
“This year, people need help more than ever,” Sharon Scott-Chandler, president and chief exectutive of ABCD, said in the statement. “Stagnant wages and soaring costs for food, rent, heat and other necessities have created severe hardship for many families. Holiday presents are often beyond their reach. Please help out during this season of giving.”
