Eversource Energy Efficiency Project Underway at Housing for Seniors and Residents with Disabilities in Greenfield

$500,000 incentive from the energy company will help reduce energy use and improve residents’ comfort during pandemic

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 5, 2021) – As part of its commitment to affordable housing options for the community, Eversource is partnering with the Greenfield Housing Authority (GHA) on a comprehensive energy efficiency improvement project in a low-income, senior and disabled housing facility. The energy efficiency upgrades at the Elm Terrace Apartments – including the installation of 180 heating and cooling systems – will help the GHA and the City of Greenfield save an estimated $5,000 in annual energy costs.

“We worked with the GHA on a holistic approach to create a safer, more comfortable living environment for residents and to maximize cost savings for the housing authority,” said Eversource Vice President of Energy Efficiency Tilak Subrahmanian. “We’re pleased to continue to advance energy efficiency solutions and help our customers save on costs – particularly during the pandemic. The housing authority has been a great partner every step of the way, and we can’t wait to see how the year-after-year savings help them re-invest in their mission to serve the Greenfield community.”

The Greenfield Housing Authority serves the city’s moderate and lower-income, senior, and disabled population. Eversource is partnering with ABCD (Action for Boston Community Development) to provide the GHA with energy efficiency experts who are overseeing the scoping, analysis, installation and quality control of the half-million-dollar project. Through the LEAN Multifamily Program under Mass Save, the project is being provided at no cost to the GHA. The new heating and cooling systems will allow residents to have control of individual heating and cooling.

“We run the Greenfield Housing Authority on a tight budget and are always looking for ways to save on operating costs so we can put more back into the community for our residents, including providing social services,” said Greenfield Housing Authority Executive Director Tom Guerino. “In addition to the direct energy cost savings and enhanced comfort for our residents, these improvements will also have a significant impact on our maintenance time and costs – which has taken on even greater importance as we continue adapting to the pandemic. Eversource and the contractors performing the work have been flexible, taking extra precautions to safely do the work with as little interruption to our residents as possible given the scope of the project and weather.”

“We are pleased to bring our project management expertise to install this cost-effective project at no cost to the Greenfield Housing Authority,” said President and CEO of ABCD John Drew. “Our long-time partnership with Eversource has driven our success in implementing the LEAN Multifamily Program statewide. These efficiency improvements will improve the bottom line of the GHA, generate energy savings, and improve the quality of life for the residents. That’s gratifying.”

The GHA also made additional energy efficiency improvements throughout the apartment building, including LED bulbs and lighting fixtures, attic insulation, bathroom exhaust fans, low-flow showerheads, smart thermostats, and air source heat pumps for individual units. The energy efficiency upgrades are expected to save more than 250,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, the greenhouse gas equivalent of taking about 40 passenger cars off the road.
