Get Help Applying for the MBTA Income Eligible Reduced Fares Program at ABCD

If you rely on the MBTA to get around or you’d like to, there’s a great way to save money on your rides! The MBTA is expanding access to reduced fares for income eligible riders. Eligible riders will gain access to half off regular fares on Commuter Rail, Subway, Bus, Ferry and The RIDE.

How to Apply In Person at ABCD

  1. Visit or call any of the ABCD locations listed 
    • Click a specific location on the sidebar to schedule an appointment
  2. Bring your documents – To apply in person, you’ll need to bring a few things with you:
    • Any government-issued photo ID – This can be your driver’s license, passport, or state ID. It has to have your photo on it. Documents without a photo will not be accepted. 
    • Proof of benefits or enrollment – You’ll need one of these:
      • A screenshot of your enrollment or benefits letter from the last 3 months, which can be shown on your phone or device.
      • A screenshot of your enrollment from your Health Connector or DTA account. Make sure your name and active status are showing which can be shown on your phone or device.
      • An award letter from MASSGrant or screenshot from the MassAid portal confirming your award. The letter should be from this school year, and MASSGrant must be listed on it.

Who Qualifies?

To be eligible for this MBTA reduced fare, you need to meet a few simple requirements:

  • Age: You must be 18 to 64 years old
  • Residency: You must live in Massachusetts
  • Be enrolled in one of the following state assistance programs:
      • Emergency Aid to the Elderly, Disabled & Children (EAEDC)
      • MASSGrant
      • MassHealth CarePlus
      • MassHealth Family Assistance
      • MassHealth Limited
      • MassHealth Standard
      • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
      • Transitional Aid to Families with Dependent Children (TAFDC)
