Asset Development

Asset Development

ABCD’s Asset Development Program helps low-income households permanently escape poverty by building assets through home ownership, savings, higher education and entrepreneurship.

This initiative currently includes an Individual Development Account (IDA) program with matched savings accounts to help low-income workers save for and purchase a home. More than 50 persons signed up for a 30-person IDA workshop series recently, demonstrating the huge demand for this program.

ABCD Asset Development has also developed an agency-wide approach to Financial Literacy Education for consumers of ABCD services. Along with IDAs, the program will include Life Long Learning Accounts (LiLAs), the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program, and access to credit counseling, foreclosure prevention counseling, first-time homebuyer services and other specialized programs.

EITC

ABCD’s Earned Income Tax Credit Program had another record-setting year with more than $6.8 million in Earned Income Tax Credits and income tax refunds provided to Boston’s low-income working families and individuals.

The EITC is a refundable federal and state income tax credit that puts money in the pockets of hard-working people. ABCD’s program operated in 12 neighborhood and downtown sites, reached more than 3,000 consumers and prepared 3,725 tax returns.

ABCD is a part of Mayor Thomas M. Menino's Boston EITC Coalition, created to generate greater awareness of the EITC. ABCD currently provides free tax help and electronic filing at half of the city's free tax sites throughout Boston. ABCD's free tax preparation sites for low-income workers:
