On September 17, Lois Siegelman and 17 other outstanding volunteer’s contributions in their neighborhoods were celebrated at the annual ABCD Community Volunteer Celebration. The event was held at the Revere Hotel and was attended by the friends, family and colleagues of the awardees.  Read more.

To the Editor: Food stamp cut … ‘just plain stupid’

The US House passage of a bill slashing food stamps when 46.5 million Americans struggle to survive below the poverty level of $23,550 for a family of four is unconscionable, heartless, and just plain stupid.  

Even at current levels, food insecurity plagues the children, working parents, and seniors who rely on food stamps to put a meal on the table. And “a meal” is the operative term. Food stamps provide one meal a day, at best. Hungry children can’t learn. Families plagued by poor nutrition and hunger will lose ground in the work world. Seniors who deserve to live with dignity in their later years will go to bed hungry. All will be at risk for health setbacks.

ABCD North End / West End NSC Thanks “Buona Sera” Fundraising Supporters

The ABCD North End/West End NSC (NE/WE NSC) wanted to honor all those who made their June fundraiser a success. They continued the fun on the rooftop of their location at the site of the former Michelangelo School, which currently houses the senior center and 71 units of HUD 202 housing and is home to nearly 100 seniors. Citizens Bank is helping 6,600 students start the school year with new backpacks filled with school supplies through its Gear for Grades program. More than 6,600 pencils, pens, folders, notebooks, glue sticks and index cards were donated by the public in all 252 branches across Massachusetts. Gear for Grades was organized in partnership with Cradles to Crayons.

Thank you Whole Foods! ABCD North End/West End Neighborhood Service Center (NE/WE NSC) thanks Whole Foods Market on Cambridge Street for heading up the outstanding “Wish-List” fundraiser on August 29th to increase supplies in the ABCD West End Emergency Food Pantry located in the Boston Public Library at 151 Cambridge Street.

Bank helps Allston, Brighton kids get backpacks

Citizens Bank is helping 6,600 students start the school year with new backpacks filled with school supplies through its Gear for Grades program. More than 6,600 pencils, pens, folders, notebooks, glue sticks and index cards were donated by the public in all 252 branches across Massachusetts. Gear for Grades was organized in partnership with Cradles to Crayons.

Contributions to Allston-Brighton include 100 backpacks to Allston-Brighton Head Start, 125 to Allston-Brighton APAC Child & Family Service Center and an additional 20 to Action for Boston Community Development.

Drew. “And the music and talent of rising star Angie Miller and The Spinners will mean a great time for everyone as we celebrate our ABCD volunteers and the work we do together in all of Boston’s neighborhoods.
