The Action for Boston Community Development Board of Directors recently elected JOHN McGAHAN, president and CEO of the Gavin Foundation, as its chairman. According to the anti-poverty group, McGahan’s advocacy contributed to the creation of ABCD’s Ostiguy High School, the recovery high school of the Boston Metro area. McGahan is a licensed alcohol and drug counselor and certified addiction and domestic violence counselor. He is vice president of the Massachusetts Recovery Homes Collaborative, and a member of South Boston Association of Non-Profits and the South Boston Hope & Recovery Coalition.


Mayor’s office offers up a social media boot-camp class

Said Irvienne Goldson, deputy director of Action for Boston Community Development:”I am excited that the city is looking at social media as a way to engage with the community. I was also interested in the social media ‘best practices’ because our organization is looking at ways to use social media to increase awareness around our key issues like HIV prevention and education. We are also trying to use it to increase awareness of the programs that we offer.”

Goldson said she came away from the presentation feeling that ABCD is “doing a good job of managing our social media presence. It was heartening to hear that we are doing it right,” she said. “It was also great to learn about the different ways we can connect with the mayor’s office.”

Roxbury Multi-Service Center Celebrates 50 years of Success on July 24!

Celebrating its 50th Anniversary serving the children and families of Roxbury and North Dorchester, the Roxbury Multi-Service Center, Inc. (RMSC), one of the first social service agencies in Boston, will host a Gala Celebration on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum from 6-10 pm.

To mark this historic and special occasion, RMSC will honor Action for Boston Community Development, Inc. (ABCD), one of the nation’s leading and region’s largest human services agencies, which is responsible for writing the Ford Foundation demonstration grant, that funded the creation of RMSC.

Building Pathways Graduates 15 Workers From Pre-apprenticeship Program

On Friday, June 27 fifteen young minority women and men graduated from the Building Pathways Program, made possible by the leadership of Boston’s Mayor Martin Walsh. Building Pathways is a highly successful pre-apprenticeship program that provides an opportunity for low-income Boston area residents to attain a career in the building trades. Mayor Walsh has often referred to the Building Pathways Program as his proudest accomplishment in the building trades.

"Creating the Building Pathways program was one of my proudest achievements during my time with the Building Trades," said Mayor Martin J. Walsh. "This is a program of opportunity that makes real, tangible change in the lives of women and people of color. I’m moved by the stories of the program participants, and I could not be more proud of the success of the program overall. Congratulations to the graduates, and I wish you the best of luck as you start your new careers."
